Bruising of the tissue under the skin surrounding eyes is termed as the black eye. Black eye happens when the tiny blood vessels or the capillaries under the skin-surrounding eye burst and blood is leaked out. The collection of fluid in the space around the eye results in swelling, puffiness and bruising. The black eye is also termed as shiner, and this condition may make it difficult for you to open the eye. In addition, there may be pain around the eye, headache and temporarily blurred vision.

What Causes a Black Eye?

A black eye happens when anything strikes on the face such as a fist, a ball etc. It may also follow some cosmetic or dental surgery.

A black eye is usually not dangerous, but the bruising or discolouration may last for several days. However, we recommend you to visit a doctor or some time it may be an indication of some serious condition.

Note:- If there is discolouration around both the eyes it may be an indication of skull fracture or head injury that requires urgent medical attention

If there is nothing, serious, the black eye resolves itself within 1 to 2 weeks and may not need any medical care.

When to See A Doctor

As discussed above, the black eye disappears typically in a few weeks without any medical intervention. But, it is always essential to ensure that there is no hematoma, skull fracture or any head injury that may cause swelling and bleeding within the brain or affect essential structures. This is why it is necessary to check out the signs and symptoms discussed below:

  • Bleeding from ears or nose
  • Two black eyes
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Blood from the surface of eye
  • Inability to move

If any of the following sign and symptoms occur, better seek urgent medical attention.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Black Eye

  • Coconut oil – Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

What to do

Apply coconut oil around the eyes and massage gently to clear the blood clots present under your eyes. Repeat this every night before going to bed.

  • Ice Pack – Ice pack reduces inflammation swelling and pain around the affected eye.

What to do

Place an ice pack to the affected eye and leave it for 5 minutes. Remove it and then repeat the same. Do this at least 3 times in a day.

  • Pineapple Juice – Pineapple juice is rich in vitamin C and enzyme bromelain. Bromelain reduces inflammation and pain, and Vitamin C promotes healing.

What to do

Extract the juice of pineapple. Soak a cotton ball with the juice and place it on your closed eyelid. You may also place a slice of pineapple on your closed eyelid. Leave it for 10 minutes. Repeat this at least three to four times a day.

  • Raw Potato – Raw potato has certain enzymes that dissolve the blood clot and lightens the skin. Besides, it also possesses anti-inflammatory properties that relieve inflammation and swelling around the eyes.

What to do

Take a slice of raw potato and place it on the affected eye. After 20 minutes, discard it. Repeat this at least three to four times a day.

  • A Warm Compress – If Black Eye is present with pain, the best option will be a warm compress. Warm compress improves blood circulation as well as alleviates pain.

What to do

Apply warm compress for 5 to 10 minutes to the black eye. Repeat it two to three times in a day for speed recovery.

  • Green Tea Bags – Due to the presence of high level of tannin in green tea, it helps to reduce swelling and pain.

What to do

Steep two tea bags in a cup of water for a minute or two. Let it cool down to bearable temperature and place the warm tea bag on your closed eyelids. Leave it for 20 minutes. Repeat this 2 times in a day.

  • Cucumber Slices – Being rich in water cucumber soothes bruised eyes. It also reduces pain and swelling.

What to do

Place a few slices of cucumber in refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes. Place chilled cucumber slices on each eye for 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat this two times daily.

Black eye without any medical attention heals on its own in about 2 weeks. With the help of the above home remedies black eye can be treated in just a few weeks. In general, black eye does not affect your vision but in case your eyeballs hurt or your vision is blurred see, your doctor as this may be due to some underlying medical complications.
