11 Healthy Ways To Get Rid Of Tinea Versicolor

Malassezia is a yeast that lives on human skin. Generally, it does not cause any skin issue protects us from other pathogens and infections. But when they grow out of control, the skin colour changes and a lighter colour patch is formed surrounded by darker skin. This condition is termed as tinea versicolor.

Tinea versicolor may be defined as skin fungal infection that causes small, lighter coloured patches and the skin. It mostly affects young adults and teens. It is not at all contagious.

What Causes Tinea Versicolor

Tinea versicolor is caused due to the overgrowth of yeast that lives on our skin. Causes may include oily skin, hot climate, sun exposure, lots of sweating and a weak immune system.

What Are The Symptoms of Tinea Versicolor

The symptoms of tinea versicolor include:

  • Small pink, white, brown or red patches on the skin surrounded by dark skin.
  • These spots do not tan as rest of the skin,
  • These spots may appear anywhere on the body but are common on the chest, back, neck and arms.
  • The spots get worse in hot and warm climate and disappear during cold climate.
  • Rarely skin becomes dry and itchy.

Home Remedies For Tinea Versicolor

To get rid of tinea versicolor below are some effective yet easily available home remedies. Try them out.

1. Baking Soda- Baking soda is alkaline, and fungi are unable to thrive in alkaline environment.

What To Do

To 2 teaspoons of baking soda add a few drops of water to make a paste. Apply the paste to the affected part, leave it for half an hour and then rinse it off. Repeat this daily.

2. Coconut oil- Due to the presence of monolaurin acid coconut oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and analgesic.

What To Do

Apply coconut oil to the area that is affected a few times in a day.

3. Apple cider Vinegar- Acetic acid rich in apple cider vinegar is anti-inflammatory . It treats infection and do not allow fungus to grow on the skin.

What To Do

Dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water. Apply the dilution to the affected area with the help of cotton ball 2-3 times in a day.

4. Castor oil- Castor Oil is rich in linoleic acid that is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory thus it treats tinea versicolor.

What To Do

Apply castor oil a few times in a day.

5. Aloe vera– Aloe vera is well-known for its healing properties. It promotes recovery and is a potent anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory.

Apply fresh aloe vera gel to the affected area and after the half, an hour wash it off.

6. Yoghurt- Not only yoghurt is rich in probiotics but also is anti-fungal.

Apply yoghurt to the affected area. After half an hour wash it off.

7. Turmeric- Curcumin is the main constituent of turmeric that renders sit antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal property.

Add sufficient water to a tablespoon of turmeric to make a paste and apply it over the affected area. After half an hour rinse it off with water.

8. Honey- The anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties of honey is not new.

Apply honey to the affected area and after half an hour wash it off. Repeat this a few times in a day.

9. Garlic– Allicin rich in garlic is an organosulfur compound that has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory property.

Crush a few pods of garlic to make a paste. Apply the paste to the affected area. After half an hour wash it off. Repeat this two times in a day.

10. Eucalyptus oil – Eucalyptus oil contain compound eugenol that has anti-microbial properties and is anti-inflammatory. It effectively fights the fungus that causes tinea versicolor.

What To Do

Mix 5-6 drops of eucalyptus oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil such as olive oil or almond oil or coconut oil. Apply the oil mixture to the affected area and then wash it off after 40 minutes. Repeat this a few times in a day.

11. NeemNeem or margosa leaves have strong antifungal property.

What To Do

Grind a handful  of neem leaves and apply the paste to the the affected area. After half an hour wash it off. Repeat this for a few weeks.

Besides the above home remedies to get rid of tinea versicolor it is also essential to make a change to your diet to prevent the recurrence of this skin orders. Eat foods low in carbs such as fresh fruits, vegetables an whole grain. Add protein-rich foods such as eggs, poultry and fish. Increase the intake of garlic and yoghurt. Add foods rich in vitamin A, E and D to your diet to regulate the production of melanin and promote quick recovery. Avoid alcohol, sugar, fruits, nuts and vinegar.

A little change in lifestyle may also prevent recurrence of tinea versicolor. Avid getting out in the sun, avoid rigorous activities that make you sweat, if you sweat wipe it with handkerchief and do not allow sweat to dry up on the skin. Take a bath two times a day.
